What is Troops to Teachers?

To use the organization’s own words, Troops to Teachers is “a U.S. Department of Defense program that helps eligible military personnel begin a new career as teachers in public schools where their skills, knowledge and experience are most needed.”

Craig Gilman, a former U.S. Marine currently serving as an education coordinator and online adjunct faculty member with American Military University (AMU), spoke to In Military Education about Troops to Teachers. Troops to Teachers is still creating positive results. In The Trentonian, Steve Chernoski writes this week about Joyce Kilmer Middle School in Trenton, New Jersey and how two of its finest faculty worked their way through the Troops to Teachers program at a time when good teachers are needed as much as ever.

Veterans Retraining Assistance Program

As of the time I am writing this, there are only a few days left to apply for the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP). Because I am not eligible to use VRAP, I was not aware of this program until now, and I regret that I did not get a chance to write on it earlier. This is an excellent opportunity for veterans who are eligible, and provides 12 months of training for unemployed veterans.

Dennis Phillips wrote a special to the Observer which has brought to my attention a new NY Job Initiative for transitioning military personnel which falls within my current line of civilian work. While a student at AMU I paid my bills by working as a Healthcare Security Officer, and continue to do so during the wait time for an active duty slot at The Basic School in Quantico.
